This course covers the competency of a Rigger under LOLER 98 and is designed to assess all areas including pre-use inspection, safe usage and correct after use cleaning and storage of lifting equipment.  Hands-on practical assessment in Safe Rigging, Slinging Techniques and Lifting Procedures are the core element of this course.  Risk Assessment and Method Statements are covered in detail, and candidates will be expected to produce their own satisfactory Risk Assessment & Method Statement prior to the practical elements.

The Assessment is conducted unaided except for safety intervention.

The course is generally recognised as a requirement for all personnel involved in Rigging and Slinging for lifting.
Training of Riggers and Slingers is carried out when appropriate with a crane and a driver, in order that the requirements of the following specifications shall be met:

Course Pre-Requirement

Delegates are to be OPITO stage 2 qualified, or must have a minimum of 2 years continual experience supported by a Company testimony.

Correct Use - Slings and Lifting Equipment

•    Methods of slinging
•    Variance of SWL i.e. choke hitch, basket hitch etc.
•    Selections - effect of angles, use of charts
•    Multi-legged slings
•    Markings

Assessment of loads

•    Estimation of weight -  centre of gravity
•    Shock loading - its effects
•    Different types of lifting equipment, their functions and possible failings

Deck Awareness

•    Planning and Rigging Operations
•    Erection of lifting equipment
•    Correct slinging of loads etc.
•    Practical assessment

Workshops Area

•    (2 Days Practical carried out on Rigging Module)
•    Hand signals, slings, (wire rope & webbing) Lifting Gear, Chain Blocks, Tirfors etc.

Safe Slinging

Tutor / pupil queries / questions and discussions on the course topics covered

Final test paper
