Introduction

Intended for trainee operators of mobile cranes and crane mechanics/technicians that service onshore cranes. The course is intended as a preparation for assessment and licensing, and is designed to impart the necessary skills to give relatively inexperienced crane operators the knowledge and competence to operate a mobile crane.

Duration

Normally five-days - Two-days classroom, three-days practical tuition / assessment.  However, the duration of the course can be varied dependent on candidate’s inherent crane operating skills.

Gives candidates and tutor an appreciation of the candidate’s inherent knowledge of subject.

General Awareness

‘Operating Policy’ within the scope of the ‘Regulations’ may vary from Company to Company and this will be accounted for in the theoretical and practical aspects of the course.  Classroom tutorial will cover, where appropriate the type of crane to be used by the delegate:

Banksman hand signalling – Radio procedures – Load rating information – Crane controls – Crane safety equipment / features – RCI – Ropes, rigging, sheeving and accessories – Outriggers – Power-controlled lowering – Logs/records
Operating procedures [theory]
Pre-use crane and equipment checks - Operation in darkness and/or adverse weather – Electrical hazards – Operations with more than one crane – Pick and carry – Travelling with boom erect – Job discussion - Blind lifts.

PART 2   Practical Tuition and Assessment of Operating Skills

Hands-on  

Closely following the Part 1 Classroom Theory phase of the course candidates are put in a hands-on crane operating role.  During this period the tutor observes the candidate, assessing his level of confidence, operating skills, general approach and aptitude.  Tuition and advice will be given as required.  At all times emphasis is placed on Safe Operation of the Crane.
Pre-start & Work Preparation    A range of operations are set which require the crane operator to carry-out:     Pre-start procedures – Preparation of the Load and the immediate area around the crane.

Operational Skills   

Demonstrate understanding of the RCI and its Load/radius limits - Limited switches – Outriggers – Working with a banksman - Emergency procedures for various simulated overload situations - Electrical Hazard awareness - Pick and Carry – etc.
Unattended / Shutdown crane procedures (short term /
long term)  Correct shutdown procedures.
Maintenance and Inspection  Good housekeeping / Maintenance routines, Inspections: Pre-use / Daily / -
Weekly  / Monthly, etc.
New Machine procedures.

Lecturers     

EnerMech Safety Training Staff  (NVQ D32/D33 accredited and with experience in crane operating).

Suitable training centre local to majority of course candidates

Dates     

Arranged to mutual agreement of Company / Candidates / Consultants.

Clothing   

For the practical period of this course all candidates are required to provide their own protective clothing (PPE) eg hardhat, safety boots, coveralls, gloves, etc
