Starting in 1977 and initially offering mechanical maintenance within the oil and gas sector, what was to become EnerMech’s Norwegian cranes division began as a joint venture between Oslo-based Bjørge Enterprise and Frances ETPM, a major global pipelaying contractor. The company held several fabrication and maintenance support contracts during the 1980s, with Elf, BP and Statoil as its main clients, growing into one of the leading companies for maintenance, modification and upgrades of offshore cranes and lifting appliances.

In 1988, another company, which started out as a manager of crane and lifting projects, Colin Ball Crane Services renamed itself as Specialist Maintenance Services, and based out of Aberdeen, continued to hold many contracts with Mobil, Centrica, CNR, Apache and BHP. SMS also developed a working relationship with A1 Safety training which opened its doors in 1995 offering safety training to the offshore industry in the “Crane and Lifting Activities” area and established training centres operating in both Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth, immediately securing several contracts with Shell throughout the UK and Philippines.

In 2008, the cranes division, along with Specialist Maintenance Services and A1 Training consultants was brought under the single operating name of EnerMech. They were joined by the senior management team that rescued PSL from receivership in 2003, delivering an annual turnover of £110 million and growing to 1200 staff before selling PSL to Halliburton in 2007.

By this time, the company had also begun including additional services such as the rental of small zoned equipment, hand tools and welding equipment for offshore use, as well as further mechanical training and competence assessment.

In 2009, EnerMech acquired Pavitt Energy and Scotia Oil Services in the Middle East as part of its plan to service customers in that region, as well as opening up new offices in Singapore and Australia.

Currently, several offices are being founded throughout other areas in the Eastern Hemisphere, as the company continues to deliver safer, smarter solutions to its customers' doors.
