William’s Cheyne Reaction Ends With Modern Apprentice Success

Cranes and lifting technician, William Cheyne, has become EnerMech’s first trainee to complete the Modern Apprentice scheme.

William qualified as a Modern Apprentice in engineering maintenance after studying part time at Banff & Buchan College and it’s believed William is the first employee of a cranes and lifting company to attain Modern Apprentice status.

William, 22, from Keith, joined EnerMech’s cranes division in June 2004 after a period of work experience. A training career path was put in place which included a college curriculum covering Performing Engineering Operations Level 2;
National Certificate in Engineering; and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 Engineering Maintenance (Mechanical).

EnerMech places great importance on the training of the next generation of mechanical engineers and has three other trainees working towards a Modern Apprentice qualification – Martin Clyne, Jarvis Ferguson and Stephen Dey.

The company also plans to recruit a number of other apprentices in 2010 from the Aberdeen area and is keen to foster strong relationships with local schools to encourage work experience opportunities.

EnerMech QHSE manager, Malcolm Kennedy, said: "William’s hard work over the last four years has paid off and he has set the standard for our other modern apprentices who are following.

We give our trainees the best possible start towards a rewarding engineering career, both in practical on-the-job tutoring and in a college environment.

"We are also working at developing strong relationships with local schools and to encourage youngsters to come in to EnerMech for work experience. This will give them a proper insight in to what a career in mechanical engineering can offer them and hopefully provide us with the next wave of engineers."
