HAVS

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a disease caused by the continuous use of hand-held vibrating equipment over a sustained period of time.

It is one of the major ongoing occupational health issues in the oil & gas industry with more and more claims being submitted every year. Vibration white finger, the vascular component of the condition, is a prescribed industrial disease, meaning sufferers can claim compensation under the industrial injuries scheme. Solicitors are now encouraging people to come forward.

There are around 5,000,000 workers exposed in the UK alone, with 2,000,000 of those workers exposed to dangerous levels and 3,000 New cases reported per year.

Employers have a responsibility to employees, under the Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, to protect employees and to comply with the vibration-at-work regulations.  Employers need to assess the risks from vibration and plan how to control them.

  • EnerMech operates a buy-smooth policy where all equipment purchased for the hire fleet is of the lowest vibration and highest quality on the market, and taking into account tool ergonomics for operator comfort.
  • We offer an overall approach that ensures employees are not over-exposed to high levels of vibration from equipment.
  • All of our equipment is HAVS certified along with Puwer, PAT and other relevant certification, and tagged using an industry standard traffic light system.
  • EnerMech can provide HAVS Awareness & HAV Testing Training and also operational advice on how to comply with the regulations. The Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 requires employers to take specific courses of action in relation to exposure to vibration. The framework for this is a complex vibration measuring formula accompanied by set exposure limits.
  • All of our engineers are trained by IOSH Accredited Training, and we can offer total tool care and management contracts with online access to customer-owned equipment, tailored reports and certification.

EnerMech also have sole distributorship for the HAVI Tool Timer which is a patented device that measures Real Anger-time Exposure.  HSE points and Actual Trigger Time are displayed to the operator whilst the machine is in use. This is a cost-effective device that will help prevent operators exceeding their daily exposure limits and greatly assist in maintaining an accurate exposure register.

All of this is supported by a HAVS Management system & health surveillance program.

PAT Testing

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 state that equipment should be tested and maintained to prevent danger.

The law does not require an elaborate and frequent system of electrical testing, although it is an oil & gas industry standard for Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) to be carried out on portable electric equipment every six months.

At EnerMech:

  • All of our electrical hire equipment receives a PAT test before every hire to allow maximum usage.
  • Our customer repair department PAT test all electrical equipment prior to its return to the client with copies of all relevant certification.

  • We also offer Total Tool Care and Management Contracts allowing EnerMech to maintain and certify client owned equipment and give online access to equipment whereabouts and certification if required (also see EnerMech Live®).
